Dr. Ryan Wheeler is a board-certified specialist in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care with a lifelong passion for medicine, animals, and helping people through some of the most challenging moments they face with their pets. Having grown up in the Bay Area, Dr. Wheeler has a strong connection to the community and values the opportunity to care for pets and families throughout the region.

Dr. Wheeler is drawn to emergency and critical care by the challenge of managing complex and critically ill patients. He particularly enjoys cases that require thoughtful problem-solving, advanced diagnostics, intensive monitoring, and collaboration among multiple veterinary specialties. His professional interests include point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), particularly its application to hemodynamic assessment and monitoring, as well as sepsis, coagulation, and trauma management. He is a co-author of Monitoring and Intervention for the Critically Ill Small Animal, published in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

While the medical complexity of critical care is a significant part of what drew Dr. Wheeler to the specialty, he believes that caring for the family is just as important as caring for the patient. Emergency and critical illness can be frightening and overwhelming for pet owners, and he strives to provide clear communication, compassion, and guidance while helping families understand their pet's condition and navigate difficult medical decisions. Supporting the bond between people and their animals remains one of the most meaningful aspects of his work.

Dr. Wheeler also has a passion for veterinary education and enjoys sharing his clinical experience and knowledge with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other members of the veterinary healthcare team. He values a collaborative approach to medicine and believes that strong teamwork is essential to providing exceptional care for critically ill patients.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Wheeler enjoys fly fishing, hiking, spending time outdoors, and, most importantly, spending time with his family and dogs.
