Overview

Cardiology is the branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the heart as well as part of the circulatory system. What causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments exist for heart problems in different animals can vary widely.

SAGE cardiologists perform numerous diagnostic functions, including ECG (a recording of the electrical activity in the heart), echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart), and Holter monitoring (a 24-hour ECG). Doctors are also likely to review thoracic radiographs and blood work that may have been done by your primary veterinarian prior to your visit. Once the appropriate diagnostics are complete, the cardiologist will make treatment recommendations. Our goal is to provide you and your pet with long-term support and management of cardiac disease.

Most dogs and cats with significant cardiac disease will require treatment with medications, many of them life-long and assessed regularly. Some types of heart disease can be treated with interventional cardiology, which uses special catheters to open blocked valves, measure pressures, or occlude abnormal blood vessels while the patient is under anesthesia. This technique can also be used to place permanent pacemaker devices in patients with abnormal heart rhythms.
