Pet Surgery in Redwood City

Surgical Care at Our Redwood City Hospital
At SAGE Redwood City, board-certified surgeons complete several years of additional training beyond veterinary school before joining our team. They operate in multiple state-of-the-art, sterile operating rooms and can call on on-site advanced imaging to plan and carry out even complex procedures without sending your pet elsewhere.
This location is a 24-hour hospital, which means surgery, emergency medicine, oncology, internal medicine and neurology all share the same building around the clock. When a case needs more than one specialist, that consult happens in person, not over the phone. If your pet is ever moved between departments, every doctor involved stays fully informed of their condition and plan of care.

Surgical Procedures We Perform
Our Redwood City surgeons perform a full range of procedures for dogs and cats, including:
Orthopedic surgery: fracture repair, joint reconstruction, and joint replacement or resurfacing for hip, knee and elbow conditions
Soft tissue surgery: abdominal and thoracic surgery, wound reconstruction, biopsies and exploratory procedures for undiagnosed conditions
Neurologic surgery: IVDD (slipped disc) surgery and spinal procedures, co-managed with our on-site neurology team for pets with a combined orthopedic and neurologic diagnosis
Minimally invasive surgery: arthroscopy for joints; laparoscopy for abdominal biopsies, gastropexy and spays; and thoracoscopy for chest biopsies, and select cardiac or lung procedures
Beyond scheduled surgery, our team is also on-call for emergencies such as a swallowed foreign object, cesarean section, internal bleeding and gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat). With neurology, oncologyand internal medicine on-site, your surgeon can easily coordinate with the right specialist when needed.
What to Expect at Your Visit
Most surgical patients at SAGE Redwood City arrive through a referral from their primary veterinarian, though a referral is not required. You're welcome to contact us directly, especially for urgent cases. If you are referred, we will coordinate directly with your regular vet to gather records and imaging before your visit.
At your first visit, the surgeon examines your pet and reviews any records already on file, then may order additional imaging (X-ray or CT scan) before walking you through the recommended treatment plan. If you're asked to prepare for a specific procedure, we'll let you know what to bring, which typically includes:
Any prior medical records, bloodwork or imaging related to your pet's condition
A list of current medications and supplements
Your pet on a leash or in a carrier
Please do not feed your pet the night before surgery. Your care team will give you specific instructions.
We manage pain through medication, paired with comfort measures like warm bedding; a calmer, less stressed pet tends to heal faster. After surgery, your pet stays in our 24-hour critical care unit for continuous monitoring. Rehabilitation often starts right away, sometimes as simply as a cold compress applied overnight.
Because physical rehabilitation is also available on-site, many pets can continue their recovery here rather than being referred out. You'll leave with written homecare instructions, and our team remains available for any follow-up questions.
