Radioactive Iodine Therapy (I131) for Hyperthyroid Cats

Hyperthyroidism is the most common hormonal disease in cats other than diabetes. This disease is caused by high circulating amounts of thyroid hormone.

Overview

SAGE Redwood City is now offering I-131 (radioactive iodine) treatment for hyperthyroid cats. I-131 is the treatment of choice for cats with hyperthyroidism. For our program we require a consultation to discuss the treatment. Many of these cases are straightforward, but some cats have concurrent illness that make them a bit more complicated. Since we are typically dealing with older patients, we want to make sure we fully understand their health status to help you make an informed decision.

We perform the I-131 treatment three weeks out of every month. Treatments are performed on Tuesdays and cats will be admitted that morning. The cats go home on Friday between 1pm and 3pm.

A 72-hour stay in the hospital is necessary for every cat receiving the I-131 treatment. While in the I-131 ward cats will be fed twice daily and receive routine care such as litterbox cleaning, freshening of water, and any cage clean-up performed by specially trained technicians.

Your cat will need to stay inside for the first two weeks and use a litter box after returning home from the treatment. Special precautions will need to be taken with cat litter disposal. Your contact with your cat will also need to be limited during this two-week period. Detailed safety precaution instructions are available upon request.
