SAGE Veterinary Centers

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with treating disorders of the nervous system.

This service is offered in our Campbell, and Redwood City locations.

The nervous system is one of the most central systems of your pet’s body, and therefore is vitally important in ensuring they lead a happy and healthy life. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and nerves, each of which can come with their own unique set of issues.

Veterinary neurologists have been specially trained to treat your pet’s neurological issues, and will ensure that your pet is comfortable through the examination and treatment process. Issues surrounding the nervous system can be severe, so it is imperative that you contact your veterinarian to schedule an appointment at the first sign of trouble.

SAGE neurologists diagnose and treat diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. Commonly treated diseases include epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease (i.e., a slipped disc), meningitis, and neuromuscular diseases, as well as tumors of the brain and spine.

Our neurologists are experienced in a variety of procedures including surgery for intervertebral disc disease, tumor removal from the brain and spine, corrective surgery for Chiari malformation, and spinal fracture repair. We also perform hearing exams, called Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response testing (BAER), for dogs prone to hearing loss.

If your pet has a condition of the nerves or muscles, all of our neurologists have a full electrodiagnostic testing suite on site. Often in neurology, imaging of the spine or brain is necessary through advanced diagnostics such as CT or MRI scan. All of our hospitals have on-site CT scanners. MRI scans are performed through our close relationship with AnimalScan, located in both Campbell and Redwood City.

Neurology services are offered in Campbell by Dr. Christina Vitale, and in Redwood City by Dr. Vivian Lau.

About Our Work with AnimalScan

AnimalScan’s onsite MRI at Campbell and Redwood City allows SAGE neurologists to collaborate and immediately determine if further diagnostics or surgery are needed. This eliminates the need for multiple anesthetic events for your pet.

AnimalScan’s staff includes Kris Kruse-Elliott, a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist who supervises anesthesia and is available to assist SAGE with complicated patient anesthesia and pain management.
