Karena Smith
Business Development Manager

Karena Smith has been the Business Development Manager for SAGE Centers since June 2016. She is responsible for developing and implementing the communication, marketing and business development strategies and opportunities for this organization of four state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals with over 70 doctors and more than 300 employees, to include brand positioning and brand awareness. Karena ensures our referring primary DVM relationships are developed and nurtured, and she works closely with the SAGE Management team on internal and external initiatives.

Before moving into her current role, Karena was the East Bay Regional Hospital Manager overseeing both SAGE Concord and Dublin operations. She started with SAGE in January 2013 as the Hospital Manager for SAGE Dublin.

Prior to coming to SAGE, Karena worked for the U.S. Army then spent close to 20 years in mortgage banking. She left the industry as a Vice President of Global Operations, overseeing the offshore loan processing and underwriting in various locations in India while managing the U.S. operations and sales force. She always wanted to work with animals and eventually transferred her management skills– first by owning her own equestrian business, then by managing the west coast territory for a medical device company when SAGE Centers became one of her clients.

Karena received her BA Degree in Liberal Arts with emphasis on Economics and Speech from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has also received professional certifications in national mortgage lending and with PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). She has served on the Board of Directors for various therapeutic riding organizations, using horses as a modality for disabled children and adults.

Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she was a military brat for many years then moved to various parts of the country for her job until settling in the Bay area in 2010. She enjoys traveling with her husband Doug and is the proud mother of her daughter Chelsea, a German shepherd cross rescue “Riley”, a cat rescue “Happy” and a horse rescue “Molly”! When she can, she competes in Dressage and Eventing, and is an avid Golden State Warriors and SF Giants fan!
