And, while our facilities feature state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and surgical tools, we pride ourselves on providing compassionate, loving care, for pets and their families alike.
SAGE Centers for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care is the new name for three multiple location practices that have been in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly 20 years. We adopted the new name in 2011 as it became clear that the collaborative nature of our practices and our specialists was one of the most important values of our organization as a whole. And since we have always managed our three practices as one organization, it was time our name reflected that.
SAGE was founded in 1992 as Veterinary Surgical Associates (VSA), eventually becoming one of the largest surgical practices in the country. Veterinary Medical Specialists (VMS) was formed in 2002 to provide advanced diagnostics, oncology services and cardiac care. The Tri-Valley Animal Emergency Center (TVAEC) was formed in 2008 to provide 24/7 emergency and specialty medical care to Dublin and nearby communities. In 2009, VSA expanded its services to include neurology and physical rehabilitation.
Today, SAGE's practice includes over 40 highly-trained veterinarians, providing advanced care for cats and dogs in four centers throughout the Bay Area.* As a combined practice, we recognize the important role that animal companions play in our culture and how they contribute to our health, happiness, and well-being. It is with this understanding that we commit ourselves to serve the San Francisco Bay Area with the highest quality veterinary specialty medicine and the utmost consideration for our clients and the primary veterinarians who have entrusted us with their referral.
24/7 Emergency Care is available at all our locations. Specialty services are available after hours through referral. Please visit our individual facilities' pages for hours of availability
SAGE's state-of-the-art facilities offer the very latest in veterinary surgical and diagnostic tools. We have equipment to perform all orthopedic surgeries for fractures and joint reconstruction, neurological surgery including brain surgery, chest and abdominal surgery, reconstructive surgery, oncologic (cancer) surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. We also perform video endoscopy and abdominal ultrasound with guided biopsies. SAGE uses digital technology for taking radiographs and we offer helical Computed Tomography (CT scan) in each of our facilities. Within our Campbell facility, SAGE offers radiation therapy with one of the most advanced linear accelerators available in veterinary medicine.
Our centers may be high tech, but they're high touch as well. You, your pet, and your family will wait in comfort in our beautifully designed reception areas. Should your pet need to stay with us, our indoor kennels are comfortable and kept meticulously clean by our caring staff.
We own and operate four centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. For more information on what's available at each local center, please visit our locations page.
In veterinary medicine, as in human medicine, some doctors specialize in an area of interest. To earn the designation of "board-certified specialist" veterinarians must, after graduating from veterinary school:
Complete a one – to two-year internship
Complete a two – to four-year residency
These residency programs require veterinarians to meet specific training and caseload requirements, perform research in their specialty field, and have that research published. They must also pass a set of rigorous examinations administered by the board of the specialty college. Only then does a veterinarian earn the title of "Veterinary Diplomate" and become a board-certified veterinary specialist.
SAGE offers specialty veterinary care in the following areas:
