The specialty of internal medicine focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical conditions. SAGE internists deal on a daily basis with gastrointestinal, renal, respiratory, immune, hepatic, and endocrine systems. Internists care for patients with acute, sometimes life-threatening illnesses and patients with complicated and chronic issues. Dogs and cats that require a speedy diagnosis or those with difficult to control diseases are commonly referred to SAGE internists.
The broad range of expertise, knowledge, and training within our group allows us to offer comprehensive care. Endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy and thoracic and abdominal sonogram are a few examples of the procedures our internists regularly perform to examine internal structures of the body. Internists help coordinate the care of the patient, many times working with other specialties such as surgery, oncology, and neurology for total patient care. The internist is sometimes called the Doctor’s Doctor — acting as a general contractor for the patient to bring together all the expertise in the hospital. We are very fortunate at SAGE to have many well-respected veterinary internists working with us. Our primary goal as SAGE internists is to provide optimal care with compassion for both you and your pet.
